Brooking's Last Season with Us

Was he still any good?
Should he have retired a year or two earlier or did he still deserve his place in the team?
Watching Gerrard got me thinking.

Mentor, Bonzo won player of the year in one of his last seasons. He was still influential in midfield. I remedy him having a decent game in the cup against Charlton I think it was. I'll have to disagree with you as well I'm afraid.

I wouldn't agree mentor. I stood there one night and Bonzo was the best player on the pitch. In midfield and 41 years old.

I was there for his last game. I recollect him trying to chase back and whipping an imaginary horse.
Top man and a great player.

Can't wait to hopefully meet the man tomorrow. He was my idol as a kid, and probably still is.
When he became manager for us at the end of the relegation season, it was the best home coming ever. The atmosphere at home to Chelsea was the best I had experienced in years. The singing of Trevor Brooking's claret and blue army made the hairs on my arms stand on end.
His non stop kicking of imaginary footballs when we played away to City was a joy to watch. He had never been so animated.
He is God in my eyes.

Just came across this and I am glad there isn't any negativity. Trev is my all time favourite Hammer. He epitomised everything that was West Ham. Right up there with the greats for me. I read all the posts with interest and this guy could hold his own. If you get the chance, watch the first semi final v Everton in 1980 when we drew 1-1. He rode some pretty verocious tackling and ran the game. He was pure class and his passing was second to none. The comment about Devo was right. If he had been fit Trev would have given it another go the next seasons and I agree, if he had been there in 1985/6 I think we would have won the league. His understanding at international level with Keegan was first class too. I had never heard the Chelsea rumour but I do know he considered moving to Man City when we got relegated in 1978 as he was worried about his England chances. Greenwood said he would be an England player whether he played in the First Division or the Fourth and thus became a one club man. I have met him briefly on two or three occasions and there are no airs and graces about the guy. He is who is and one of the reasons why I hold him in such high regard. Top bloke.

He always said that if Devonshire had not picked up that knee injury, he would have played another season. The QPR match was on the Big Match... the way he set up Cottee was sublime.
Going to see him at Lords this Friday. He is doing a book talk about Bobby Moore.

I dunno if this is in his book but he was considering an offer to play for Chelsea for a year but it never came to anything. He was excited about th eprospect of playing with Nevin, Speedie and Dixon etc. In the end he decide to hang up his boots.

I think Trev could have played on at least one more year. Like fine wine and Teddy Sheringham he was getting wiser with age.
He told me two things he would retire when he felt he was at his peak.
He wouldn't go full time into management.

Always been convinced that Sir Trev retired too early... last match I saw him play was v QPR in April '84 in which he was easily MoM and played as well as ever.
What a finale it would have been if he had played in 85-86, just imagine Cottee & Mac running onto Trev's perfect passes beyond the defence.... carnage would have ensued and perhaps it would have made the difference.

Brooking had a very bad pelvic injury in 1982. He probably shouldn't have even been in Greenwood's Workd Cup Squad and only came on for the final 15 minutes against Spain.
He recovered sufficiently to give it one more season.
His final game against Everton was a great occasion under the lights. Southall played a blinder in goal and made a great save from Brooking late on to deny us a point.
The whole ground stayed behind to give the great man a lap of honour. No rush for the tube that night

Might have made the difference in 85-86. Dickens was ok, but not of Sir Trev's calibre.

Brooking was never a fast runner in any case so he didn't really lose any pace as he became older. He did seem to pick up an awful lot of injuries, however, and we did miss his creativity for a good couple of seasons after his retirement. For me, Brooking was always worth a goal, whether he created it or scored one himself, he was like the DiCanio of his day, but without the crazy temperament.
